Impact-resistant roof

Impact-resistant roof materials
Potential benefits of roofs with strong impact resistance
As North America's largest roofing manufacturer, GAF offers a variety of products that may help protect your roof against hail, including shingles and roofing materials that pass UL 2218 Class 3 and Class 4 impact tests.1 Products that are UL 2218 Class 3 and 4 rated may even qualify for insurance discounts.2
1 Only products sold in packages bearing the UL 2218 Class 3 or Class 4 Classification statement are rated for Class 3 or Class 4 impact resistance. Testing performed under controlled laboratory conditions. GAF makes no express or implied warranty about the impact performance of these products against hail. Except as otherwise provided in the Timbersteel™ ArmorPledge™ Limited Warranty, hail damage is not covered under GAF limited warranties. See applicable warranties available at gaf.com for complete coverage and restrictions.
2 Insurance discounts are not guaranteed. If available, discounts vary by state and insurance company. Contact your insurance agent for information before installing a new roof.
Impact-resistance testing
UL 2218 impact testing involves dropping various sized steel balls onto tested materials from different heights and evaluating whether there are any cracks, tears, or fractures on the back surface of the product.
Products that withstand the impact of a 1.75-inch steel ball dropped from 17 feet receive a UL 2218 Class 3 rating while products that withstand the impact of a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet receive the highest rating, UL 2218 Class 4.
Two GAF technologies help select products achieve a Class 4 impact resistance rating¹
SBS-modified asphalt technology
Our proprietary SBS-modified asphalt technology provides excellent flexibility, which helps reduce impact stress. This technology also enhances resistance to cracking and allows shingles to lay flatter in colder temperatures2 when compared to our standard asphalt shingle, making these SBS-modified shingles an easy-to-handle and dependable option for use in varying climates.
This SBS-modified asphalt technology is featured in Timberline® AS II and Grand Sequoia® AS shingles as well as TimberCrest® and Seal-A-Ridge® AS ridge cap shingles.
Ultramat™ high-performance mat technology
UltraMat™ technology enhances the shingle at its core to strengthen the shingle’s support layers to help achieve a UL 2218 Class 4 impact-resistance rating.3
This technology is featured in GAF products like Timberline UHDZ® shingles and TimberTex® ridge cap shingles.
2 In temperatures of 40℉ or higher.
3UL 2218 Class 4 Impact-Resistance Test performed by Certerra Analytical - PRI under controlled laboratory conditions. GAF makes no express or implied warranty about the impact performance of this product against hail. Hail damage is not covered under the limited warranty.

Frequently asked questions
Will I get a discount on my homeowners insurance if I used impact-resistant roof materials?
Some insurance carriers may offer discounts on homeowner's insurance premiums if you install qualifying UL 2218 Class 3 or Class 4 rated roofing products. Insurance discounts are not guaranteed. If available, discounts vary by state and insurance company. Contact your insurance agent for information before installing a new roof.
Will my homeowners policy change because of an impact-resistant roof?
While some homeowners insurance carriers offer a discount for UL 2218 Class 3 and Class 4 rated roofs, they may require that you add a cosmetic waiver endorsement to your policy to receive the discount. These waivers can limit the coverage for hail in the future, including the exclusion of hail damage that does not cause the roof to leak as a result of the hail damage. Contact your insurance carrier to find out what discounts you may qualify for with an impact-resistant roof and how it may impact your coverage as a result.
Do impact resistant shingles meet FORTIFIED Roof™ standards?
Asphalt shingles that are rated Good or Excellent on the IBHS Hail Impact Ratings, such as GAF Timberline® ASII shingles can be used to comply with the shingle impact resistance requirement of the FORTIFIED Home™ Hail Supplement. Visit gaf.com/fortified and current FORTIFIED Home™ Standard available at fortifiedhome.org for details. U.S. only. For the most current IBHS ratings,
visit here.
Is Timberline HDZ a class 3 or class 4 shingle?
